Delicious finds a new plate

Delicious, the popular social bookmarking service, has been acquired by AVOS Yahoo. This is great news for users.

In late 2010, Delicious found itself abandoned by its owner, Yahoo, when internal information from a company meeting leaked, suggesting that the bookmarking site would be “sunsetted,” a codeword for removed, shut down or sold. Yahoo quickly responded, announcing that they would indeed be selling Delicious.

This was a genuine scare for loyal users, who number over 5 million.

A taste of Delicious

Launched in 2003, Delicious became one of the most successful social bookmarking services on the internet. It was a convenient way for internet users to store, organize and manage website bookmarks.

The site set itself apart from the competition by featuring a user-friendly interface, easy RSS feeds and a memorable name. Recognizing people’s interest in trending topics, Delicious also features a “hotlist,” as well as “recent” and “popular” pages.

By enabling visitors to use it free of charge, Delicious has turned itself into a reliable hub of memes and unique content.

Sticking with Delicious

When it was dumped by Yahoo, many thought Delicious would go the way of other catchy websites. People closed the lid on it and turned to similar services, like Pinboard and Diigo. Less than two years later, those naysayers would be proved wrong when Delicious was picked up by the founders of YouTube, Chad Hurley and Steve Chen.

Under the leadership of AVOS Yahoo, Delicious is set to become “the best information discovery service” on the internet. Hurley and Chen have proven to be masters at anticipating user needs. Their little video-sharing website, YouTube, became a global phenomenon, eventually attracting the attention of Google, who purchased it for $1.6 billion.

Taking the knowledge they have acquired over the years (including a stint with PayPal), Hurley, Chen and AVOS will turn the already popular Delicious into another culture-forming giant that satisfies users and challenges expectations.

How businesses will benefit from the acquisition

Yahoo’s loss is the business world’s gain. Delicious, and services similar to it, continue to grow in usage and application. Companies are still learning what kind of impact social bookmarking services can have on their growth.

By compiling all the best content from around the internet, Delicious helps customers find the business or product that works best for them.
