Foursquare, the mobile client for smart phones that allows users to "check-in" at places around the world, is launching a new notifications tray that will make it easier for users to interact with friends using all of Foursquare's features. The new notifications tray will focus not on friend’s check-ins but more on the interaction between friends regarding check-ins. The new notification system will help streamline the process of information gathering in Foursquare, making it easier to focus on what matter in friends’ activities.

The new notification tray is similar to Facebook’s well-known news feed, in which events are laid out in chronological order and make finding out what people are doing at a certain time much easier. Some examples of notifications that will appear with the new feature is notification of when you have been ousted as the mayor of a property, when your friends have used one of the tips you have left at a location and when people have left new comments on items you have commented on. Facebook is also more seamlessly integrated with this new feature, as it will give a notification when one of your Facebook friends has joined Foursquare.

The new notification system is not yet available on all devices. According to Foursquare, it is immediately being rolled out on Android devices, followed by Blackberry and iPhone models in the near future. Foursquare is an innovative service that has been a model for fast growth on smart phones. Its simple premise of checking in at places both local and exotic has made it a highly successful client for smart phones. By checking in at a new place, the user is automatically given the possibility of becoming the “Mayor” of that location, assuming that the person checks in again at the same location a required number of times. This number may only be a few visits or many over an extended period of time depending on how popular a destination the location is. This new notification system should help Foursquare consolidate its growth and place more of an emphasis on the area where it sees the most potential in its particular GPS, location-sharing niche: social networking.
