MotherKnows has raised $1.7 million in funding. The online startup, based in Menlo Park, CA, received contributions from First Round Capital, Giza Ventures, The Band of Angels, Charles River Ventures, and other investment angels. MotherKnows plans to use the capital to complete development of its mobile and web-based products and launch them.

MotherKnows is a cloud-based medical records database for children. It is intended to let parents monitor the health records of their children. It creates and maintains a Personal Health Record for each child that contains information such as blood type, allergies, medications, doctor visits, and due immunizations. Parents will have 24-hour access to their children's medical records through both the MotherKnows website and MotherKnows mobile applications. MotherKnows aims to be the first source for aggregated child health data.

MotherKnows is taking precautions to keep its highly sensitive data private. According to the service's co-founders, its security is consistent with guidelines set forth by the Federal HITECH and HIPAA acts. Each child's health information is encrypted and cannot be shared with third parties without a parent's express permission. Parents can, however, choose to share specific kinds of information with doctors, caregivers, schools, and camps to help them understand their child's medical situation and needs in a convenient format. MotherKnows stated at this year's TechCrunch Disrupt NYC show that it has worked along with a medical advisory panel to make sure that all parts of the site are legally sound with regards to the medical field.

The MotherKnows team is comprised of chairman and co-founder Hesky Kutcher, CEO and co-founder Greg Coff, programmer Mohammad Shahangian, and VP of Marketing Francisco Guerrero. Coff has previous experience with child services market, having been involved with Pampers and BabyCenter.com. Both Kutscher and Coff also have experience in the online automotive field.

The MotherKnows website is already live as of this writing, but the service is still in closed beta. Kutscher hopes to launch the service publicly in late summer of 2011. Although MotherKnows is its team's first project, they hope to eventually create services to target other demographics with specific health issues, such as seniors and extended families.
