Twitter_birdHave you ever followed someone on Twitter and almost immediately received a nice, personalized message thanking you for following them?

Have you ever wondered how they did that? They really took the time to send you this message? How nice of them! But then again, they probably didn't. At least not the way you would think.

Most likely they used a third-party-application for this, and I have compiled a little overview of some of these applications.

SocialOomph (formerly known as TweetLater.com)

social-oomph

It offers free and professional (paid) accounts, and for most people, the free account will be more than sufficient.

Some of the features are:

  • Send DMs (direct messages) to new followers
  • Schedule tweets
  • Follow those who follow you
  • View @Mentions & retweets

The professional account gives you access to tons of more features for $29.97 a month.

This is my choice for people with one account.

TweetManager

Although "currently in private beta", it is fully functional (and free!) and offers the following features:

  • Auto-follow
  • Mass messaging
  • Auto-reply
  • Auto-post

It also allows you to connect two Twitter accounts for easy management

TwitterDMer

twitter-dmer

This free, little tool allows for the use of variables to turn sterile-looking messages into personalized ones that make your followers feel special.

Twitter MassDMSender

twitter-massdmsender

This tool allows you to send a direct message to up to 250 of your followers per day and per account.

TweetAdder

tweetadder

TweetAdder is unlike all the other applications because it is not an online service but a desktop application.

It is the application with the most features, including extensive statistics and multiple account management, but all this naturally comes with a price tag.

It offers free trials for Windows and Mac; the price of the full version depends on the number of profiles and/or accounts you want to manage:

  • One profile: $55
  • Five profiles: $74
  • 10 profiles: $110
  • Unlimited: $188

Its video library of tutorials is massive and makes this my choice for businesses.
